Fish Friday
Fish Friday take place in the village of Anse La Raye. It is very similar to the gros islet street party but focuses primarily on seafood. Its location is along one of the beautiful beaches of the island and there is a variety of local music to enjoy. There are large varieties of food and drinks and it is a great place to chill out before the night begins. We strongly recommend going there with a group as it adds to the experience and ambiance. It is a small village so the experience is a very local one. The event starts about 08:30pm and runs until midnight.

Tips

You can drive there but the roads have quite a few hairpin bends on the way. Parking is not readily available and depending on where you park it can be quite a walk to and from the beach. The area is not very well lit so stay with the crowd and do not stray off the beaten track as in any country be aware of pick pockets and opportunists. Toilet facilities are limited to bars and restaurants and a queue can develop quickly. Bring some cash with you as almost nowhere in this are accepts cards. It is better to use the local currency as you get a better price and value for your money.

Gros Islet Street Party

The Gros Islet street party is one of the hottest events on the weekly calendar. Taking place every Friday in the heart of the town is an explosion of food, music and fun. Speakers are set up across one of the main intersections and the streets leading in to the centre are lined by proprietors serving an array of fresh local food. You can get octopus, freshly caught fish, clams and other such delicacies. BE CAREFUL of the Bois Bande otherwise known as spice rum. It is a locally made aphrodisiac and has some powerful effects for both male and female drinkers who brave its effects. One shot usually does the trick as testified by many locals and visitors. The event kicks off about 9:00pm and can go well in to the morning. Most people use this as a warm up point for starting off their night and then move on to other bars and clubs about 11:00pm

Tips
It is an open door event and although it is policed be aware as in any country about pick pockets and opportunists. Stick to the main road where the event is held and only buy goods from proprietors with stalls. Not a suitable place to bring children under the age of 12. Do not bring large back packs as it makes moving through the crowd very difficult. Bring cash with you as very few if any places accept cards but make sure it is the local currency as you will get a better price than using the US dollar or British Pound. You can drive there but we strongly recommend taking a taxi as parking is limited and a bit of a walk from the actual event and also you can enjoy your drinks. When you get a taxi arrange a time to have them pick you up as getting a taxi from the event can take quite a lot of time and there are a lot of unlicensed drivers waiting for a fare to overcharge. This will also give you an opportunity to negotiate a better price with the driver.

Yearly Entertainment

Carnival

This is one of the year’s biggest events in the Caribbean and takes place within the first two weeks of July. The Carnival is an expression of art through visual and vocal interpretation. It is a chance for everyone to “let go” and people become free of their inhibitions. It has been described as a collective exhaling of the entire island. The event starts off with the battle of the tents in which various artists from different tents compete for the title of soca monarch. During the course of this part of the event you have the steel band competitions the junior soca monarch competition and hundreds of carnival beach, boat and band parties through out the island.

The main event starts off from the Monday morning of the final two days and is known as Jouvert. This is where you get the mud mass where people parade through the streets throwing mud at each other and dancing until the sun comes up. It is then off home for a quick change in to your costume and rendezvous with your respective band. Here the party really begins with most bands offering free drinks to its members. The trucks start up and the music begins to play. The artists start to sing and the band begins to move in its procession with its occupants dancing the day away in their beautiful costumes. Each band passes in front of a panel of judges parading its costumes and participants. The first day ends about 8pm and it is off to the clubs and bars to practice for the following day by dancing the night away. The Tuesday is the final day where the judges will make their final decision as to who is the winning band.
