Gros Islet

The northern most town on the island, Gros Islet is a sleepy fishing community neighbouring the popular centre of Rodney Bay. This picturesque bay is enclosed on the north by Pigeon Island National Park and on the south by Labrellotte Point. It hosts a weekly street party every friday night from eight thirty in the evening.  The streets are cordoned off by the police and local council.  The local bars and shops open until the twilight hour.  Local food and souvenir vendors line the streets selling local food including barbeque, steamed fish and a local delicassy called Lambi.  Speakers are setup in the heart of the town and music plays until the last person leaves.   

 

Pigeon Island  

Historical Pigeon Island National Park

Known most recently as the major venue for our annual Jazz Festival. The 44 acre island reserve and park is truly a monument to much of St Lucia’s history. Strategically located just off the north coast, with Martinique in clear view, this site was pivotal in many conflicts between British and French troops. Today the park is used for far more relaxing and joyous occasions many choosing this as the spot to exchange vows.  The view from this well- preserved garrison is breathtaking and the short hike is manageable by most anyone. Castries Harbour  

Castries

This is the capital, commercial center and main cruise port of St Lucia.  It was founded by the French in about 1768 under the name Car'nage and renamed after a French official in 1785 the Marechal de Castries, a French minister of the Marine.  Today she is a bustling Centre with a natural harbour welcoming several cruise lines from around the world, offering excellent shopping in the town market for fresh produce and arts and crafts and Duty Free centres.  Take a walk through the real St. Lucia and see the fruits and vegetables for sale in the Castries Market.  Try one of the local soups called Bouyon at one of the small restaurants, excellent for picking up local gifts and souvenirs for friends and relatives.

Caribelle Batik

Painted in white and bright yellow, the Victorian mansion named Howelton House is now the home of a Batik enterprise which demonstrates this fabric art. Visitors see how wax is applied to cotton to prevent coloration of specific areas before the material is dyed. The process is then repeated until the entire design is completed. Shopping for the high-quality designs is part of the visit. Orchid gardens on the grounds overlook Castries below this mountain called Morne Fortune. Opening hours are 0800 - 1600 Mon - Fri.

Marigot Bay

This wonderful Bay, whose name is a French Antilles word for river which runs into wetlands by the sea, is one of the Caribbean’s only natural safe harbours and once served as a vital wartime base.  It has been a centre of development over the past five years but maintains its rustic and historic feel.  The location for the original Dr Doolittle movie, it is a most incredibly relaxing stop with excellent dining, world class accommodation, yacht hire and diving location.  It is said that the British once ambushed the French by camouflaging their fleet with palm fronds and in April 1794, Queen Victoria's father, the Duke of Kent, landed here with grenadiers to wrestle the island from French hands. An oasis along a lonely stretch of road through the village of Anse la Verdure on St Lucia’s west coast, nestled in a wooden structure that doubles as a factory and café.  The establishment gained international fame when it was featured on Paula Deen’s show on the USA’s Food Network channel.   The family processes raw cassava to make farine (cassava flour), then concocts a variety of flavoured unleavened breads—coconut, cherry and raisin, apple and raisin, cinnamon, banana, chocolate, saltfish, smoked herring, ginger, peanut, pineapple and apricot.  Plas Kassav’s small factory is open for guided tours, where visitors can see traditional methods used and see them cooking in a traditional oven.

 

Botanical gardens

Take your time and stroll through the manicured tropical gardens of the island brimming with rare and exotic flora presenting a riot of colour, perfume and lush tropical vegetation. Nature trails meander through the gardens with scenic vistas and peaceful resting points. Follow the trail and discover the Diamond Waterfall made famous by the movie Superman. A beautiful muki award winning historical estate including a six score botanical garden, hot spring mineral baths & waterfall located within a lush natural gorge. Nature trail connects the garden with the estates old restored sugar mill now known as the old mill & waterwheel. Pitons  

The Pitons

The magnificent mountains speak for themselves.  Stand at the base in awe or brave the climb and take a walk/hike to the summit.  At the peaks eye you can see as far as Martinique to the North and Saint Vincent to the South.  Gros Piton and Petit Piton, soar thousands of feet above Soufriere and are St Lucia’s most famous land mark and a World Heritage Site. There's the 400-Acre La Sikwi Sugar Mill plantation with a museum, theatre and a 40ft waterwheel located in Anse-la-Raye. The Morne Coubaril Estate which is located in picturesque Soufriere, with its worker's village, sugar mill, manioc and cocoa houses is a meticulously preserved museum, restaurant and botanical garden.

Fond Dor  

Fond Dor Nature Historic Park

Enjoy the tropical island's natural beauty on a tour that combines historical St Lucia with the tranquility of a nature sitem the Find d'Or Nature Historic Park includes symbols of the Amerindian settlement and historical buildings of the sugar age. Follow a hiking trail through an estuarine tropical forest to a wide white sand beach that is frequented by nesting Leatherback Turtles, then visit and relax at the Interpretation Centre. From there, drive to the Latille Waterfall where a twenty-foot waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation and additional pools await you.

Follow the scenic country road to a tropical Caribbean-style working plantation where you will heighten your senses by smelling, touching and tasting a variety of tropical fruits and plants. Once you have explored the plantation you can relax in the plantation house sipping local rum punch, local fruit juices and coconut water before being treated to an authentic Creole Lunch.  Relive the battle of Robot, and revisit the military genius of the freedom fighters. This historic battle, where freedom fighters inflicted a most decisive and historic victory against the mighty British Army, was fought right on the doorstep of what is now Fond Doux Estate. This site does not only have history, in contrasts to the battle, it is adorned with a warm 19th century plantation house, with nature trails through a local fruit garden.

Fond Latisab Creole Park - Babonneau

Experience the truly St Lucian way of life, with a tour that takes you to a community in Babonneau called Fond Assau. There you will experience traditional practices such as preparation of cassava bread, cooking on macambou leaves, catching crayfish in the river, collecting honey from a beehive and the very authentic display of wood-sawing while in Chak Chak band plays traditional music in the background.  An experience of creole traditions and practices to include the preparation of cassava bread, cooking on macambou leaves, catching crayfish in the river; viewing the collection of honey from a beehive; and the very entertaining practice of wood sawing to the music of a chak - chak band, is what the creole park is all about. It's truly "kweyol" experience which can be enjoyed by both local and visitors a like.

 

Union Nature Trail

Come spend some time with nature on a looped trail which takes you through a secondary dry forest in just about an hour. Many dominant tree species which thrive here are still utilized. Birds can be spotted along the trail, including humming birds, finches and warblers. Discover the unbelievable magic and wonders of important herbs in the medicinal herb garden. Bush medicines are becoming an increasing form of alternative therapy. It is quite possible that you may find out about your long-looked for remedy here. An Interpretive Centre provides you with information on endangered species, vegetation zones and the forest. It takes ten-fifteen minutes drive form most hotels in the north to get to this trail.
